Locating game data from retail or shareware editions
Where you place the DUKE3D.GRP file depends on the operating system where you intend to play JFDuke3D:
- (Linux, shared with all users)
/usr/local/share/games/jfduke3d - (Linux, single user)
~/.jfduke3d - (macOS, single user)
~/Library/Application Support/JFDuke3D - (Windows) wherever you've put duke3d.exe
Where you source the DUKE3D.GRP file depends on which retail or shareware edition you have access to:
- MS DOS Registered version CD-ROM
- From the
DN3DINSTdirectory of the disc. - MS DOS Atomic Edition CD-ROM
- From the
ATOMINSTdirectory of the disc. - Megaton Edition from Steam on macOS
- In Steam, go to Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition, open the 'gear' menu, choose Manage > Browse local files. In the Finder window that opened, look within the
gamerootfolder forduke3d.grp. - Megaton Edition from Steam on Windows
- In Steam, go to Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition, open the 'gear' menu, choose Manage > Browse local files. In the Explorer window that opened, look within the
gamerootfolder forduke3d.grp. - Atomic Edition from GOG.com on macOS
In GOG Galaxy:
- Go to Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition > More button > Manage installation > Show folder.
- In the Finder window that opened, right-click (or hold Control and click) the highlighted Duke Nukem 3D.app item, and choose Show Package Contents.
- From the Go menu choose Go to Folder... and type
Contents/Resources/game/Duke Nukem 3D.app/Contents/Resources/Duke Nukem 3D.boxer/C.harddisk. Press Return. - Look for
DUKE3D.GRP.
- Atomic Edition from GOG.com on Windows
- In GOG Galaxy, go to Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition > More button > Manage installation > Show folder. Look for
DUKE3D.GRPin the Explorer window that opened. - 20th Anniversary World Tour from Steam on Windows
- In Steam, go to Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary, open the 'gear' menu, choose Manage > Browse local files. Find
DUKE3D.GRPin the Explorer window that opened. - MS DOS Shareware version
If you have a downloaded file named
3DDUKE13.ZIP:- Open
3DDUKE13.ZIPto obtain theDN3DSW13.SHRfile. - Rename the
DN3DSW13.SHRfile toDN3DSW13.ZIP, then uncompress it to obtain theDUKE3D.GRPfile.
- Open
